I have had the same problem as you have. Autentication failing for an increasing
number of users, until authdaemon is restarted. Then everything works fine for some
hours or some days, and then autentication starts failing again. I soon got tired of
restarting authdaemon.

This problem has been discussed noumerous times on this list. The solution Fred Read
suggested to you have been reported by several persons to fix your problem. I also
followed similar instructions some time ago and now my system works stable and fine.

The idea is to NOT use authdaemon at all, since it is very needy for restarts.
Compiling using --without-authdaemon and --with-authvchkpw and also --witout all other
autentication metods (like Fred Read describes). This will make sqWebMail autenticate
directly with vpopmail and skipping authdaemon as a middle man. Do not start
authdaemon at all.

The only downside to this is that your users will lose the possibility to change their
password. (But this they may do with qmailadmin - if you have it installed)
