This is an excellent question. I am also concerned that SSH 2 is still very
much in the development phase. In addiiton, there are several questions
about sshd2, which I and at least one other individual have recently
independently posted to this mailing list, some of which,as yet, have not
been answered. Examples of this include-

     1. Is there some sort of "SyslogFacility" feature in ssh2?

     2. Despite proper ssh1 compatibility setup as described in the
SSH2.QUICKSTART file, it does NOT work in either direction. Of course, my
testing has been limited to Aix 4.3.1. Perhaps this is less of a problem on
other platforms such as solaris; though I did notice that one or two other
individuals acknowleged running into similar difficulties.

     3. Is there some sort of "AllowHosts" feature in ssh2?

Many features in the ssh2 application are still under development. Perhaps
it is simply too early to convert over to using ssh v2.x in place of ssh
v1.x ?

By no means do I wish to be critical of the developers who, as I understand
it, are busy maintaining both the 1.5 connection protocol in ssh v1.x and
in developing the new 2.0 connection protocol present in ssh v2.x. I do,
however, have a concern that perhaps most of the attention is being given
to the development of ssh v2.x commercially (DataFellows ?) and that it
will be quite sometime before a robust ssh v2.x server and clients for the
various hardware platforms are available non-commercially. Perhaps, this is
the normal pattern of development for a new software product such as ssh
v2.x.

My $.02.

Subject: Long term viability of SSH, will there be a free SSH 2?

I don't want to start a flamewar here, but I am concerned about the future
of the SSH protocol now that it is no longer free for commercial use. We
were discussing upgrading to 2.x, but I'm not sure I want to because
freeware products like MindTerm may not support 2.x. Also, if SSH had
remained free, then an X product like XVision would probably eventually
support SSH authentication. Right now we have nasty workarounds like X
forwarding thru F-Secure for NT.

Will PKI from IBM replace SSH or is there a movement in the OSS community
to
code an SSH 2 server? I have no problems spending the $ for v2.0 servers,
but I am worried about the unhealthy effect this ($ for commercial) may
have
on 3rd party application development.

What are your thoughts?
