I don't need a new protocol actually. I would like to have the ability to add extra namespaced nodes to each <item>, that would solve all my pet peeves with roster entries.

The way google does it would seem the most sensible to me, and doesn't require any changes to the core roster protocol, it just needs an entirely separate spec for the particular extension just like this google one.
