I thought I read somewhere (probably lowendmac.com) that some versions
of the StarMax can only boot from the CD if it is the primary drive on
the primary controller (at least for ide).  I have not yet had occasion
to test this theory as I don't have any bootable PPC cd's, except one
that won't boot with the ide cd-rom on the secondary interface.  Perhaps
a SCSI cd-rom would get around this?

If you can get a boot floppy that would be your best bet.
