Ha, never really thought of the StarMax as a particularly good looking box!
Actually OS 9 is good for a few things. You can, as a random example,
run Tomcat on it and have a nearly bullet-proof web server that runs JSP
for scripting; there are other web servers for OS 9 out there that'll be
even more bullet-proof in a practical world (ie, the OS 9-specific web
servers out there might have security holes, but ain't nobody ever going
to know enough about 'em to find them). Ftp server, same thing.
You might also check out Print66 which makes your OS 9 Mac into a nice
print server, even for Windows and OS X. Moz 1.3 has also been built
for OS 9, and does an okay if not impressive job.

Here's a question you might be able to answer - why won;t the Starmax
boot
from CD, given that the CD I'm using IS a bootable one and does have a
PPC
operating system on it? Any ideas?
Hoping the mail server lets my last post in this time, hopefully I've
answered that one. Old World won't boot from random Linux CD. With an
OS 9 CD, sure, hit "C" and it'll boot up, but because of the way the
firmware works you can't go straight Linux without some trivial help
from an OS 9- install. I think you need about 300 megs of space for the
bare minimum, iirc.
Sigh... I hate seeing good hardware go to waste. And the Starmax is
rather
more aesthetically pleasing physically than the vast majority of
computers
I've seen. Still has to earn its keep, though... :-}
Might let us know what jobs you're hiring for so that we could tell you
if OS 9 could do the trick. Personally, other than the wacky memory
management that'll bring the whole system down if something borks, I
like the OS quite a bit.
