Suggestion from Ferdinand has fixed the rendering: in src/core/renderer/StelQGLViewport.hpp, line 102 (StelQGLViewport constructor), replace fboDisabled(false) with fboDisabled(true)
Incidentally glxinfo reports that GL_EXT_framebuffer_object is supported, I guess this is a different feature from FBOs in Stellarium?
