Looking at your output, it is possible that you are hitting one
of the errata against the 88SX6081.  When using a 1.5Gbps drive
it is possible that the hardware will incorrectly lock
the communication speed at 3.0Gbps and thus be unable
to communicate properly.  I, personally, have not
seen the problem, but Marvell has.  As a test, do you
have any 3.0Gbps drives to see if they work better?

If they do, I may be able to provide a test binary
that might work around the issue.

yup, it's a fresh install of B62.  I actually cannot do a fresh install with 
the drives attached either, it just hangs while building /dev.  After 2 hours I 
gave up on that.
