In short, N_port refers to FC device port, while F_port refers to fabric switch port. I would suggest you read RFC4172 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4172.txt) chapter 3 "Fibre Channel Communication Concepts" to get a good understanding of the port types.
