Hey James, unfortunetly this problem do not produce any crash dump. It silently reboots. In kmdb I stepped through the sd`_init and can confirm that reboot happened in mpt`mpt_scsi_config_all somewhere in the middle after mpt_scsi_probe. I could provide you more information, like print some mpt structures, etc if you'd like. I think you should be able to reproduce problem in VMWare 5.x as stated above.
