Not sure why it's not working. Try this

sharectl set -p lmauth_level=3 smb
use "passwd" again and then try to connect one more time.

Solaris has it's own security considerations and this would be
considered a security concern.

On a side note, Windows supports viruses too, do you want that support
in Open Solaris as well ;).
