I was with you up to this point and then I got lost. Before saying "not so fast" I think that the claim should be verified. I suspect quite the opposite. Most appliance devices have hardly any cache, and it is mostly write cache. An OpenSolaris device has a huge cache, with an enormous RAM-based read cache. The Fishworks systems also use battery backed DRAM as a write cache.
