This may be the problem I had....didn't run killall before running the
apt-get sequence.

I started with these sources on my first attempt. On my last two
attempts, I used the non-US sources (as well as the /debian potato main
contrib non-free)  from ftp.stormix.com 
On the last attempts, I also did not update and upgrade kde.
 By the way,I think the kde should be
http://kde.tdyc.com/debian potato kde kde2 contrib
rather than ftp.
(But then, since I have had a zero success rate on this,who knows?)
