Frank and list: Need to bring in one more variable: fuel shape. Imagine the fuel is pencil shaped. If placed vertically, they work fine to make char. If horizontal and parallel, they can block most vertical air flow. Anyone able to supply biomass fuel spheres?

I think in gasification they use the term "superficial velocity" a fictional speed derived from the air volume and cross section of the chamber, the actual speed of any given bit of air flow through the spaces will be much higher of course.
