Dear Friends,
I completely agree with Otto, Paal, Richard and Jock,
Decentralizing gives opportunities for those who work the hardest and need to
be paid the most.
I have tried all the stoves you have made and they are all very good stoves.
But I have also found the main reason clean burning TLUD stoves have not caught
on (at least in Haiti) is the lack of consistent dry fuel.
Our main interest at HRI is stopping erosion caused by lack of trees. We know
vetiver grass is the best cure to this problem.
HRI feels the lack of trees even sticks trimmings to find for cooking fuel is
so severe in Haiti we need a substitute like grass pellets for the entire
country.
We know grinding vetiver grass and making them into pellets will cost more than
making briquettes by hand. But we also know that making briquettes will take
too long and not be excepted by the entire county.
The need to make the pellets cheaper is critical but we know that gasification
of grass can be used instead of buying diesel fuel. The benefits of using
modern technology will propel the economy helping those who need it most.
We are working with Cornell University and wants to use Green Energy technology
for making vetiver pellets for stoves and electrification. We are now shipping
vetiver to Cornell University who will be testing it and making it into
pellets. Cornell is the leading institution on developing grass for fuel,
field crops and forages and business management.
Farmers and villagers buy lots of diesel fuel to run their wells and haul
produce down the mountains. When we perfect local electrification
decentralizing will bring money to the top of the mountain and the people who
are growing vetiver grass and saving the ecology. Decentralizing will also
bring self-sustainability to the poorest countries in the world.
Your best stoves should be able to be made into kits, preferably in the country
of use. Then they can be sold and trained by students who can sell and show
how they are used with vetiver pellets.

Subject: Re: [Stoves] ETHOS Discussion about decentalized stove efforts

Dear stovers,
I strongly second and recommend the statements of Paal W, Richard S and Jock.
I also admire very much the model of World Stove and the work done by Nataniel
M. on the subject.

Internet has opened Our eyes and the doors to reach out to all and everybody,
just look to the "Arab spring".
It is just a matter of time, when the BIG Ones, also will realize that
decentralized services, are far more relieable and more sustainable in the long
run, than centralized ones. Last year, we had a power- and communication -cut
of almost one week in the middle part of Norway, due to a strong
winterstorm. But also very much thanks to centralized solutions and a strong
belive in, that computer science, can even repair broken powerlines,
remotely....................We need the skills of competent people to solve
such challanges on the GROUND, HERE and NOW.
Short term profits, should not be mixed into Development goals, like production
of stoves and suitable fuel for low income families in a rural setting.

Just let the BIG Ones, do it their way. I belive that we need to pave our own
path for the future to create jobs and sustainable solutions on each continent
and for all people.

Best Wishes for a Decentralized and sustainable Production line in 2014. Otto

Jock, Ben, List, etal
1. I suggest we are apt to see a mixed mode for stoves: centralized
manufacture of key parts and decentralized assembly. This is the World Stove
model (based on least cost principles - import duties, quality control,
attractive design, added services, etc). I worked twice for a small local PV
company in Zimbabwe, and this was their key - provided much better service for
customers than any of their competitors, for small parts - not the panels.
2. Ben: Deloitte does good work. I found this one: did you have a
different cite?

A key aspect of the decentralized model is that it is the most effective way to
leverage the human and financial capital resources at the edges. These are far
vaster in aggregate than anything the centralized model can arrange. The simple
fact is that the problems being addressed require a level of resources that
ONLY the decentralized internet model can deliver. The under resourced central
model can only fail, as any badly under capitalized business knows.
Best Wishes for a Distributed & Decentralized 2014.

Dear Paal, and all,

As much as I can agree with Paal's statements, but I think the cards are
stacked against the success of decentralized efforts.

The issue that Paal raises about the need to have decentralized production of
stoves (and fuels) is a touchy topic because the "model" of the affluent world
is for centralized industrial production. That centralized model is certainly
a cornerstone of the GACC and WB and many who feel that the model of the
affluent world will work to resolve major issues in the developing world. And
they control access to most of the funding. And they present very convincing
arguments. (If they could not, they would not be in control of the situation.)

It would be good to have some examples of decentralized efforts having major
impacts. Maybe the spread of the Kenyan ceramic jiko (KCJ) is one example.

I will be at ETHOS and willing for such discussions if others step forward
wanting to discuss this informally as an ad hoc sub-group.

Due to health and age it will not be possible for me to participate, but after
30 years working with task and followed the discussion at Stove list I have
come to this conclusion.

There has to be a discussion at ETHOS about centralized or decentralized
activities regarding fuel and stove production with a view on the enormous
unemployment in developing countries. Taken into consideration the high demands
of clean combustion, pellets will be the future biomass fuel for simple clean
burning such as TLUD ND and FD. Energy forestry and agriculture energy
production together collection of waste biomass of different types will give a
lot of new needed jobs.

· Registration of local waste combustible biomass.

· Use of local resources

· Biochar production by cooking.

That will be the best way for GACC Stove program to support the low income
groups all around the worl
