I'm Mitch Berg. I live in the Midway.
My stepson attended Randolph Heights, Museum Magnet, Washington, Como and Arlington. My daughter is in seventh grade at Ramsey, after attending Hancock, Mississippi and Lynwood. My son is in fifth grade at Mississippi, after going to kindergarten at the Museum Magnet.
My father, my stepmother and both of my mother's parents are former teachers. I grew up and went to school in North Dakota.
I'm *generally* happy with the SPPS, although only because I stay on them *constantly*- my kids' teachers dread the sound of my approach. I also pay my kids $1 for every example of political indoctrination (invariably from the left) from their teachers and school staff for which they bring home documentary evidence, and they are both very good at digging it up - it's their little cottage industry. This really irritates me.
And while I'm not a reflexive critic of public schools, I seriously question whether the "Sit your butt in your chair and learn what we tell you to learn" model of education *can* really work in any environment; I find the prospects rather depressing. I've become seriously interested in the Sudbury model schools and have been involved with a group trying to set one up in the Twin Cities. It seems to be moribund, so I'm looking to see if another such group exists.
