"Tom also says In 2002, the district received more than $12,000.000 per student."
This number has me wondering as well. Just this morning I heard NPR talking about a study that had been done on Minnesota schools and they estimated between $6,000 and $14,000 per student as the yearly expense across the state. What's strange is that sending a child to private school looks like it's half as much. Why would public education be so much more expensive? (Actually I can think of a lot of reasons, mainly bloat and lack of market constraints that reward the schools for producing a quality product.)
For that much money I could get a full ride scholarship to a decent university. Why do our public schools cost more? I'm not pointing a finger at anything but that really high dollar figure and wondering what's in it.
Let me see if I can find a link to that NPR/MPR program...
Ah, here's something at http://news.mpr.org/collections/education/
[[The cost of education
Host Gary Eichten and his guests discuss a new study about what it costs to provide a basic education in Minnesota. (Midday, 02/25/2004) ]]
First link at the top of the page. It leads to a sound bite file, which I can't open. I was hoping for a transcript. Maybe they'll post that in a day or two? Anyway, if anyone else is interested in the cost of public education, the few minutes of it I caught while driving were informative.
