However - to suggest that this incident "destroyed" this boys life may be a bit overexaggerated. Prior to anything happening, this boy had already been kicked out of his home by his own mother and was living with an Aunt. Its very clear, that he was in trouble already (how deep that trouble was, I cannot judge from newspaper articles and online debates).

I'm going to violate one of my rules and respond while really pissed off.

There was a lengthy article on Andrew in the Strib a long time ago. He left his Mom because they were so unstable (and, in fact, homeless for a while). He sought out his Aunt in an attempt to get some stability in his life, and seemed (in a few months) to be responding to their fairly strict ways.

This kid wasn't "trouble", he was shit on, from birth up until today. Of course he has some private thoughts in his private journal that are violent -- I did at that time, and had a nice middle class upbringing. Some kid who actually was beaten by his father and walked the streets with his mom has EVERY RIGHT IN THIS WORLD TO BE ANGRY!!!!!!

Your judgement of him is just plain wrong, unless you've been anywhere near where he's been. That the system is doing it to him once again shows the kind of world we live in.

In fact, I will say categorically:

Our judgement of Andrew Deutch is not an indictment of him, but of us.

Period.
