I'm one of the students from the Macalester geography class that has been holding the various topics discussions, but this post has nothing to do with the discussions at all. Our final project involves visiting a specific "space of citizenship" and analyzing it in the context of related academic thought on the subject of citizenship, civic engagement, democracy, etc. The area I had been researching for has recently fallen through (they told me I wasn't allowed inside), and I was wondering if any of you could contact me with ideas of places that you may know of or are involved with, as this should reach a pretty active group of citizens.

A space of citizenship is a broad definition that I can manipulate to fit the space. Don't be shy about recommendations. It would include any area where people act in ways that effect a community to which they belong. (This COULD include certain bars, stores, places of worship, volunteer organizations, government buildings, etc.)

Any ideas that you may have would be extremely appreciated, but several characteristics would be especially excellent:
-Accessibility from Macalester (either public transportation or proximate to the campus)
-Two or more simultaneously occuring dimensions of citizenship (e.g. American, other nationality, ethnic, neighborhood, linguistic, religious, socioeconomic status, occupational, other common interest...)

Thank you all so much for any help you can provide me with! Please contact me as soon is as convenient, as I need to have at least 10 pages by Saturday night!
