Erin, it seems like there are quite a few rumblings about folks trying to persuade Jay Benanav to run again. He has achieved some major milestones in his last few years on the council, creating a record that shows clear leadership and a willingness to strike compromises between constituents and other community groups.

Jay frequently clarifies the mayor's "no-tax" rhetoric by pointing out that items like "streetlight maintenance fees" that are assessed to homeowners, schools & churches, are really just another form of property tax, even though Randy likes to brag that there have been no property tax increases for 12 years. I need to start taking rhetoric lessons from Randy and the other Republicans...

There was little to no discussion of Chris Coleman's candidacy, and the most frequent comments I keep hearing are: "Randy-lite" or "feigning interest for long periods of time" or "totally undistinguished record on the council." 'Not an auspicious start, despite the heavy-hitters on his campaign committee that many of us puzzled over.

I'm hoping it's just an excess of egg nog and spiked cider (protecting us from a blast of the cold) that are keeping us otherwise occupied, and not yet engaged in this new race. Also, after our recent election cycle, the amount of energy we expended needs to be restored and recharged as we take time for the holidays and slow down a bit.

I am also curious about the race for County Commissioner that will take place in only a couple of months, with Sue Haigh's departure. That will be a short one - 60 days is specified in the election statute, I think, so it will be a fun little winter contest keeping the political junkies among us entertained. Any idea who is considering that race?

Happy Holidays!

Subject: [StPaul] Benanav mayoral run?

So, did everyone see the article about Jay Benanav maybe running for mayor? Has
anyone heard anything more or gotten the inside scoop? I think he could beat
Kelly, although he'll need to muster a lot of money and support to do it. But
given how close their last race was...
