Politicians are making mistakes all along, just like the rest of us, but fortunately we don't have the local newspapers dogging us for some salacious gossip that will make their newspapers fly off the stand. They do, and I take my hat off to people who are willing to expose their families and themselves to that kind of scrutiny in exchange for the privilege of leading us as a civic community. It's the hardest, most important job around and we need smart people to do it.

Jay Benanav is a progressive Democrat with a solid history of working for the people on the issues that matter most to us. As a politician, he has never let us down. What happened in his personal life is not germane. In 2005, we will be electing a mayor, not ordaining a rabbi, minister, priest or mullah. Benanav would make a great mayor.

All of us embroiled in the Ayd Mill Road controversy should remember that Jay campaigned last time around with a "no connect" button on his lapel at all times. I've still got my t-shirts from that campaign and would gladly put them on to work for Benanav again for Mayor of Saint Paul.
