We moved into the Mounds Park neighborhood in '03. Deer shooting through the brush along the bluff is a regular occurrence. More dramatically, I've seen deer leaping through backyards and over fences two or three times. And the highlight of such drama was our first summer here. An enormous doe darted yard to yard to yard for nearly ten minutes, freezing in our front yard while our entire family stood, watching. She stood a few feet away from our then 4 year old daughter and just as my husband scooped up the child, the deer bolted past the pair and right over where our daughter had been standing, coming within inches of my husband's arm. Very exciting! The poor creature finally made her way back to the brush along the bluff.
We seem to have an unsual number of jet black squirrels over in this neck of the woods, too. Finally, since our neighborhood is nestled high along the bluff in an area full of mature trees, I have felt a much stronger sense of the natural landscape here than I did on the West Side: we feel the force of wind differently; can hear the sound of rain and wind differently; we have an abundance of animals and birds living in the large trees around us.
