Erik wrote " the mysterious sewer dwelling raccoons who I have only seen 5-6 times in 15 years!", which got me thinking about my favorite St. Paul Wildlife incident, if I can just cross the Ford Bridge. My wife and I were on our first date and we parked by the Ford Plant on River Road. We walked across the bridge and walked up to the Minnesota Veteran's Home so I could show her the view of the lock and dam and river from above. As we went behind the kitchen we were startled to see at least 40 sets of green eyes starring at us from the dumpster and an adjacent tree. Apparently, the raccoons had come up from the river bottom for dinner. We gave them a wide berth, not wanting to come between 40 hungry raccoons and their supper chuckling all the way, after we realized what the eyes were. A little later, as we going back across the Ford Bridge to Saint Paul, we looked down and saw a family coming home from dinner. There was momma and papa, leading three babies across the road down to the locks, back into the rushes by the river. We've been back several times to see if we would see such a sight again, but not once have we every seen the raccoons back up there. People have told me about coyotes, but I haven't seen one. And, of course, the mysterious sewer dwelling raccoons who I have only seen 5-6 times in 15 years! That all of this would be around us just 3 blocks from the Xcel Center is a lot of what makes it a great place to live.
