OK, in my opinion, the rhetoric on this one is getting a little extreme (not unusal), so I'm going to jump in and see if we can't get a bit more realistic.

One participant has suggested that without tasers:

  - school staff are being carried out in ambulances

While another suggests, that the simple presence of tasers in the schools suggests

  - that we are "beating" our children into submission.

While there may have been some cases of staff carried away from our schools in ambulances, I don't think its fair to suggest that this is in any way "normal." Nor, does the presensce of tasers mean that they will be used or that we are "beating" our children into submission. The presese of "guns" has not resulted in us "shooting" our kids into submission.

The reality is, that our children are growing up in a violent world. And while they are safer at school than they are on the street, violence does creep into our school buildings from time to time.

If Police are already carrying guns in our schools, then I'm not sure how the mere presence of "tasers" makes things worse. If anything, it seems to me, that it provides a less dangerous option to officers that might otherwise consider use of a gun their only option (should circumstances reach such a level).

I think that the actual use of "tasers" should be monitored very closely - and if, they are used in situations that might have been resolved in a less aggressive manner, then I'd be very concerned. BUT, the mere presence of tasers (as an option to firearms) does not feel like such an extreme thing to me.

Best wishes,
