Just how true is the above statement? Certainly,
there's violence in the world but are our children
really growing up surrounded by violence? Violent
crime has actually been decreasing for some time.
Studies have shown that people perceive that their
world is far more violent and dangerous than it
actually is. So, I think statements like the one above
do an injustice in that they contribute to an
unjustified climate of fear.

This is not to say that there is no violence in our
world or that the police and others shouldn't be
taking appropriate measures to guard against it. But
let's not contribute to a climate of fear and
paranoia.

The next thing we'll hear is that Social Security is
heading for bankruptcy or that Saddam Hussein is
threatening us with weapons of mass destruction.
