St. Paul Federation of Teachers Endorses Goldstein for
School Board

SAINT PAUL - APRIL 25 - Tom Goldstein, community
activist, St. Paul school parent, and former business
owner on Grand Avenue has been officially endorsed for
St. Paul School Board by the St. Paul Federation of
Teachers, Local 28 Committee on Political Education
(COPE). Goldstein, seeking the DFL endorsement at the
city convention on April 30th, was endorsed along with
incumbents Elona Street-Stewart and John Brodrick.

"The St. Paul Federation of Teachers has endorsed Tom
because we appreciate his willingness to stand up for
schools, students, families, and teachers in these
difficult times," said Roy Magnuson, a history teacher
at Como Senior High and COPE chair.

Goldstein, a past chair and treasurer of the PTO at JJ
Hill elementary, as well as active on that school's
site council, was elated by the news. "I value the
enormous contribution that teachers make every day to
the lives of children in St. Paul, and know what kind
of toll budget cuts and added pressures in the
classroom are having on teacher morale. We need to
stop blaming teachers for underperforming schools, and
instead join together to change the political dynamic
that is overshadowing many of the good things that
schools accomplish. I'm grateful to have the
endorsement of the St. Paul Federation of Teachers,
and look forward to working with them on meeting the
many important challenges facing our schools."

While this is Goldstein's first run for elected
office, he has previously served as a member of the
City of Saint Paul's Ayd Mill Task Force, on the
Macalester-Groveland Community Council, was a
co-founder of the St. Paul Gus Macker Tournament, and
was honored with a volunteer of the year award in 1991
from the St. Paul Division of Parks and Recreation. He
has also been active with the Parents United Network,
a statewide parents organization that advocates for
"an adequate, equitable and stable funding system for
Minnesota’s public schools." Goldstein is a 1988
graduate of the William Mitchell College of Law and
holds an undergraduate degree in psychology from
Carleton College.

Goldstein's campaign is chaired by Jane Prince,
legislative aide to city councilmember Jay Benanav.

Goldstein can be reached at 651-231-7035.
