Designer Dress at Nieman Marcus: $1500
Designer Boots at Sak's: $900
Designer Glasses at Eye Masters: $400

Photographed at a campaign rally wearing a "Vote" scarf prominently
featuring the icon of the opposite party?

Priceless.

For meandering-message, discipline-less, incoherent political
strategery, there's the McCain-Palin Campaign.

For everything else, there's Mastercard.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This ain't a 'gotcha'..she's SURROUNDED by campaign staff ALL THE
TIME, just like McCain, Obama and Biden are; they all have a makeup
person, every one of them HAS someone who checks them over before they
go out on stage, whose JOB it is to catch these things.

I've worked on campaigns before, even Congressional or state lege
campaigns tend to make sure *someone* does a once-over on the
candidate before they go out in public.

I expect the elephants are on the other side of the scarf, or the
scarves were intermingled on the rack and someone grabbed the wrong
one, it's just *no one noticed*.

This isn't a massive loser moment like putting Dukakis in a helmet
that made him look like Rick Moranis in "Spaceballs", I'll grant you,
it's merely a moment of humor, sure to pop up on Leno and "The Daily
Show".

But it's also telling of all the little things on a campaign level
that the McCain campaign has been fumbling all along.

Sweat the small stuff, and the big stuff tends to fall into place...if
you've got good 'big stuff' in the first place.

Winning presidential campaigns run on ruthless message discipline.
We've seen it on both D and R sides; this is why Clinton won ('It's
the economy, stupid!' wasn't a message to the R's, it was a message to
the Clinton campaign staffers, reminding them to stick to the game*)
and Kerry lost, because his campaign faltered on this issue and Bush's
was relentless and single-minded. (and wrong, because he basically
told the American people "You're all gonna die if you elect Kerry",
but it was a winnable campaign strategy)

*The Sundance Channel been running a documentary 'Return to The War
Room' <http://www.sundancechannel.com/films/500326125> talking to the
principals of the first film, with discussions of current campaigns.

Watching it made me realize how far we've come since 1992. James
Carville was shaking his head as he recounted that no one had email or
the web, they would post people at the fax machines, ripping off the
fax as it came in and carrying it off to the appropriate person, and
how EVERYONE both sides would stop everything at 5:00 every evening to
watch the nightly news.

There are campaign staffers on both sides today who have never known
that there wasn't a 24-hour news cycle...
