With the current version (you can check on the Help->About page - it should now give a four digit version number and list 6.0.5569.125 (or greater)) it should work regardless of the mode the phone or the app is in. The app does not follow the phone setting, it has its own theme setting. So in order to see a dark mode in the app you need to go to Settings and open the Theme part...
