Darn, I forgot something. I was saying that I suspect Douglas Hunt doesn't bother to deal with the "October" problem - but one way to do it would be to calculate the position of Oct 1 and Oct 31 twice over (for each of the two dial sizes) then split the difference. I think that would reduce the maximum error by about half.
