Two methods have been used down the years.  The first is to secure the
gnomon by stays that are soldered (or otherwise fixed) to the edges of the
window or to the lead surrounding the actual dial - if that is a small part
of the window.  

Sometimes, though more rarely, the glass is drilled and one or more of the
stays held by nuts on either side - with some padding of course.
The glass used is usually 3mm thick  (one eighth inch) and this is
remarkably strong.

I have a photo somewhere of one of Chris's dials from the back if you are
interested - but it might take a day or so to find it.
