(german) wikipedia states that the process of hard anodizing uses cooled electrolytes, so much higher current can be used. usually the protective layer is 25-50µ, half of which adds to the thickness of the piece.
with very pure alloy layers of 200µ can be produced.

I wonder if the thicker layer is more weather resistant, or if proper sealing is more important (which is what I would expect).
