Being a contributor, I use XFCE. It is available from BlastWave

have tried to make sure it is compatible with the SunRay architecture.
There is stall an issue with the audio mixer, but for a
"cholesterol-free" window manager, it does well.
I've considered XFCE, but my only issue is that I'd rather my "application
launcher dock" and my "taskbar" not be separate desktop elements. On a
1024x768 display, I'd rather waste as little real estate as possible.
Additionally, I'd like to keep the desktop such that it's usable by users
other than myself (so this rules out the super-lightweight ones).

I can understand. I use the auto-hide feature for the task bar myself.
There is also an auto-hide for the panel. Making custom panels is
also a piece of cake, so your users can find the apps they need.
BlastWave also has many other window managers available (BlackBox,
IceWM, Enlightment, WindowMaker, OpenLook).
I wrote a script to launch rdesktop for my wife when she logged in. It
would connect to my SunPCi II card running Windows XP. Wrapped up on
the SunRay, it was a nice little package.
