Please explain how they are different! The Sun Ray is simply a new generation of an old concept, which some day too, will be replaced. IMHO, A Sun Ray and an Xterm are more similar than they are different. > I think this thread getting a bit of the old he said/she said (although > we seem to be lacking the she's) My basic point was that it's false advertising to claim Sun Rays never need upgrading. Perhaps that's technically true, since there is nothing in them to upgrade, but they WILL be obsolete, requiring a replacement, or in other words, an upgrade. > IIRC most dumb terminals required quite a bit more config than the Sun > Ray ever did. Baud/Parity/Data, RS232, Current loop etc. You can't > config a Sun Ray locally. So configuring a Solaris DHCP server is an easy thing? I think not! Sure, you only have to do it in one spot, but configuring the RS232 parameters is simple compared to having to deal with Solaris' DHCP server, which can't even handle a macro over 255 characters! Why the limitation and short sightedness by it's designers? > You might buy a new Sun Ray because you want a serial port or DVI, but > that's about it. To increase performance, you upgrade your server. I would say that is a misleading statement as well. Are you going to tell me if I have a 10Ghz Opteron I'm going to notice the difference in performance on a Sun Ray? Hog wash! You will hit the limiting factors of the 100Mb Ethernet or slow display chips inside the Sun Ray long before that. I noticed a great performance boost going from 400Mhz Sparcs to 1.5Ghz Sparcs, but I'm willing to bet I'm not going to notice the same performance perception going from 1.5 Ghz to 6Ghz Sparcs when they are available. There are limitations to the Sun Ray design, for Sun to imply they will never be obsolete or never need upgrading, or to make them faster by upgrading the server is simply misleading if not outright wrong! I also find it interesting that this list lets dozens of Sun Ray technical questions go unanswered, but start poking holes in Sun's marketing and all the evangelists come out of the woodwork. I guess we know what's important to people. _______________________________________________ SunRay-Users mailing list [email protected] http://www.filibeto.org/mailman/listinfo/sunray-users
