I believe they were intended for use in a country
that wanted to use their own firmware with their
own cryptography. They were designed to not
accept Sun firmware for this reason by special
request of the OEM. I wasn't directly involved in
this deal, but this is my understanding from what
I heard. I believe we've only made such a deal
once, but at least in theory it could happen again
in future.
Is the hardware different, or is the difference in the firmware
loader in flash or EPROM? If the latter, perhaps it can be gotten to
with a JTAG interface. If the stuff is that sensitive (as suggested by
the paragraph below) it might be a good idea to find a way to erase
it...that way the buyer gets a usable device and the special customer's
interests are protected.
