Actually we do use enterprise edition, but I didn't bother to enable DRS for a single host. That would explain it, thanks that's good to know.

I had to give up my test ESX environment for a few days for another project. When I was working on it last, I was still stumped on the automatic standby/suspend.

It didn't seem to matter, even with no RDP sessions to the VMs.. The windows automatic standby wouldn't work, tried it many times, logged in and out of the console. After executing the 'Shutdown -> Standby' from the console of the VMs a few times, even that didn't work. For some reason the first time I tried it, it worked.. But usually it would go to a black screen, and pop right back out to the login screen.

I was starting to think maybe the ESX emulated keyboard/mouse (mouse more likely with vmware tools installed) was waking the VM up before ESX can grab the ACPI call and suspend the VM. If this is the case, then the Windows standby countdown, would always get reset, even with a 1 minute timer, it never worked. The 'wake on LAN' feature is disabled in the .vmx as well.

After trying the standby via the console at least 20-30 times on each VM I realized that it would never work on the VMs in the dynamic pool, but I could do it on my statically mapped VM. I had about a dozen in the dynamic pool, and only a single static VM. Though the automatic standby still didn't work in my static VM.

When I get some cycles, I was going to try a VM without VMware tools installed just to test, and more statically mapped VMs. Fresh out of other ideas.

I realise I never came back to you on this topic, it turns out I was wrong and that feature is not a basic one of the Virtual Infrastructure, it's only available with the VMware Virtual Infrastructure Enterprise edition, which I imagine is not the one you're running (the feature is called DRS and is described at http://www.vmware.com/products/vi/vc/drs.html).

We'll try to ignore such errors or identify that situation in the future, sorry about that confusion,

Cyrille
