I bet they were NOT using Sun Type 7 keyboards.
This was discussed at length previously, you might be able to search
through the archives and find the conversation.

What I have found is that the Symbol Scanner works well with the Sun Type 7
keyboard.  Any other brand will turn the num-lock off on every scan
(tried Apple, Dell, Microsoft, IBM)
I seem to recall there was some theory that we could program the
scanner to send a different country code to prevent this, but since I
use all Sun Type 7 keyboards I never investigated any further.
