It turns out this is CR 6860627. Proof that I'm just not paying
attention to Nevada at this point.
The symlink was bundled into the package delivering support for Xsun. At
the time it was assumed that CDE and Xsun would be removed at the same
time. That package is not installed if Xsun is not present. So this was
been an issue since Xsun was dropped from Nevada, and not felt worth
addressing as we move towards OpenSolaris.

The SUNWutxsun package was not installed.
I have installed it manually without any problem. I am wondering why
it did not install during the SRSS installation.

Hello Bob,
I use dtlogin.
There was no link for 0100.SUNWut in /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d.
I have copied the 0100.SUNWut.sh to /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d and
sound is now working.
So the missing 0100.SUNWut link seemed to be the problem.
I know gdm will replace dtlogin in the near future but do you know
if there is a direct performance advantage in using gdm instead of
dtlogin?
No, there is no performance advantage to using gdm.
That symlink should have been delivered as part of SUNWutxsun. Is
SUNWutxsun installed on your system?
