There's basically two options:

1) multiple direct RDP sessions to Windows Server

2) VDI with Windows XP (each user gets a VM)

1) is more resource-economical, but as mentioned below, you need TS CALs and
some apps may not run properly. If your app doesn't run properly under TS,
you may be better off going with 2). For 2), instead of TS CALs, I think
you need a volume XP license. If you already have that, it may be easier to
go with 2) from a licensing perspective. Otherwise 1) is also a little
simpler since you don't need the Sun VDI layer in the middle, and at least
in my limited experience with it, Sun VDI can be a little finicky sometimes.

If you need multiple users logged in simultaneously, you want Windows Server
[which has terminal services [TS]] rather than XP. [You could distribute XP
VMs instead of offering TS sessions but I don't have experience with that.]

Whether you decide to do it virtually or with physical hardware depends more
on how many users will be running this software simultaneously and what
performance they expect. A few sporadic users could be served virtually but
once you start getting beyond that, performance will drag. Also, make sure
the app can run in a terminal services environment [some do not, like
NetMeeting].

Of course, you're going to need a license server to manage the TS CALs
[client access license].

Kiosk mode is not dependent on using the Sun smart cards; I have kiosk mode
running at my location without the smart cards.

You can connect local printers to the thin clients; you just have to set up
the analogous queue on the SunRay server.

Subject: EXTERNAL:[SunRay-Users] Working with MS Windows???

Hi guys,

I need some design advice if it's ok......

Basically what I am going to do is setup a Sun Fire V20z with 6GB of RAM

and 2 x 73GB HD's running Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10 and install the latest

SRSS on it. Now since I don't know much about Windows apart from single

XP based desktop systems which I haven't used for many years, I would

like to find out the best way of enabling multiple users to login to Win??

To describe my situation better, we have some software which is an

accounting program which will only work with Windows; now in order to

get this to work with Rays I can run the setup in 3 different ways:

1) VBox VDI image of XP

2) Separate machine running Win XP or Server 2k3/8 and rdp with Win

connector

3) VBox VDI image of Win Server 2k3/8 and rdp with Win connector

I could also use kiosk mode as the users will have Sun Smart Cards to

seamlessly open into Win or use a separate VBox style window for the MS

display - I am not sure which would work best.

Also I am considering installing the Sun Global Desktop software suite

too on the machine but I don't think it will work with Ubuntu, I know

CentOS works fine or Solaris..... for out of office access to the office

instead of using a VPN; has anyone got any success stories on this?? I

know there is an SGD mailing list which I am subscribed to also but

since it's kinda combined with my SRSS issue I wanted to post here :-)

Last thing quickly, is that I run a single Ray at home currently with

very basic setup so is there any help on kiosk mode or any examples that

I can have a look at?? I can download the SRSS admin manual from

filberto.org site which is fine but was wanting a quick fix I guess!!

Anyhow many thanks to any responses and best regards,

Kaya
