Kaya,

Hmm; if it's a DOS app, I'd be surprised if it ran with multiple,
simultaneous users. It's worth a shot just to see if it works but if it
doesn't then you'd have to go the VDI route.

Kiosk mode is the way the TC is set up to connect. For example, you could
configure it to run the Windows Connector and go straight to a WTS. Or you
could use TCL and create some fancy control panel with many options from which
the users can choose [Windows, UNIX desktop, xterm, browser, etc.]. It's
basically a method of control: the first example gives users no options while
the second gives them maximum choice. It's up to you as to how much leeway to
give the users.

Whether you decide to do it virtually or with physical hardware depends more on
how many users will be running this software simultaneously and what
performance they expect.  A few sporadic users could be served virtually but
once you start getting beyond that, performance will drag.  Also, make sure the
app can run in a terminal services environment [some do not, like NetMeeting].
Of course, you're going to need a license server to manage the TS CALs [client
access license].
Kiosk mode is not dependent on using the Sun smart cards; I have kiosk mode
running at my location without the smart cards.
You can connect local printers to the thin clients; you just have to set up the
analogous queue on the SunRay server.

Many thanks Scott that really clarifies a lot of things!! :-)

Basically we need to run an accountancy program which everyone out here runs on
Win XP as it's based on an old DOS app I think since the GUI is very alike so I
have no idea if  it will even  run on MS Server in the first place. I can't
remember the name of the app but it's a local Turkish design meaning I have no
clue as to how or where it will function!

Just quickly about kiosk mode: I am a bit confused as to what this enables one
to do..... I have read up on it but since I have no experience in using it I am
lost. Does it enable the user to switch which OS the Ray uses; as in Win,
Solaris, Linux? And as a local user do I have control over this?? Or does it do
something else and I misunderstood completely??

Regards,

Kaya
