I'm finding it very hard to understand how this would work as described.
Are you sure you weren't hearing audio from your server, instead of the Sun Ray?
Firefox will try to open /dev/audio. That's the point of our LD_PRELOAD, is to
interpose I/O calls to /dev/audio and redirect them to the Sun Ray utaudio
audio device. And that's why FF 3.6.x won't start up with our interposer
library, it has a bug dealing with interposes for open() calls which causes a
deadlock.
If you don't set LD_PRELOAD, I believe sound will go to /dev/audio - i.e. your
server, not the Sun Ray.

We are using FF 3.6.17. My sound keys do work with GNOME and the Sun
keyboard. This if for SRS 5.2 which is plagued by the redraw issue.
We plan to upgrade to 5.2.1 tomorrow.
