The general rule seems to be that unless you are using AltiVec 
enabled applications a G3 is about as fast as the same clock speed 
G4.  That's from reports of other folks though, not from anything 
I've tested.

Also, my understanding is that OSX actually makes use of the AltiVec 
in some parts of the OS.  Is that correct?  If so, one would get much 
better performance under OSX with a G4 than with a G3.
