Ernie,

I have used Norton programs for a number of years.  Including System 
Works for the past year.  I can't think of anything those programs could 
do to damage your CD Drive.

Try running a CD Drive cleaner disk in your CD Drive.  If the drive is 
not recognizing disks it is probably just dirty.
