Sorry to hear you're having one of THOSE computer moments, but in all
honesty I'm at a loss to see how Norton SystemWorks could do anything to
your CD drive. It does scan the SCSI bus for drives, but that shouldn't do
it. And although I don't like Filesaver, and always disable it, I can't
think of any components of SystemWorks that might do anything like that.

Could it be a coincidence?
On a positive note... replacing those Matshita drives is one of the best
things a person can do on their UMAX clone. I realize you weren't ready to
replace it, and it's frustrating to have problems, but just about any CD
drive is better than those darn Matshitas.
