It's just XLR8's designations for their various ZIF Carriers.

The ZIF Carrier is the card that plugs into the CPU slot in our
machines, and then accepts a ZIF card in the ZIF socket on the
Carrier.

XLR8's original Carrier was just called a ZIF Carrier. When the G4s
came out, they released an updated carrier card that includes the
ability to support their dual processor scheme and that is the ZIF
Carrier MPe. However, G4 processors have an incompatibility with
Dual Bandit six slot machines (which the S900 is not) such that
certain cards installed in the lower three slots (second Bandit)
cause the machine to freeze. So XLR8 invented a modification to fix
that problem and they named that carrier the ZIF Carrier SSE (six
slot edition).

However, the SSE is $20 - $30 more than the MPe and is only needed in
a machine with dual bandit chips. So, if you plan never to use it in
a dual Bandit machine (9500, both 9600 models, PowerTower Pro,
Daystar Genesis), there's no reason to pay the extra bucks for the
SSE.
