I don't know the answer to your bigger question,  though I might do a 
backup if I were you just in case.

As far as the 2940UW goes, it is incompatible with Speculative 
Processing and will freeze your machine at boot up if speculative 
processing is enabled and a G3 or G4 processor is installed (except 
NewerTech brand G3/G4).

Speculative Processing is disabled using your G4 card software 
utility or control panel.  Zapping PRAM may reset Speculative 
Processing to Enabled, and then you won't be able to boot until you 
either pull the 2940UW or replace the G4 with a 604E or earlier long 
enough to boot up and set the controls to disable Speculative 
Processing again.
