Try cleaning the little strip of glass in front of the scanning area. 
Use something that won't leave streaks, like alcohol. I've found that I 
get lines through things when that area is a little dirty. My scanner is 
a Umax 1200S, yours is a better model, I think.
I highly recommend the Umax MagicScan Software instead of VistaScan. You 
can download it from the web site.
