Thanks for asking Nancy. This may be kind of a long post though, thanks
for your patience everyone.

Cable tends to vary by ISP. For the most part, it isn't much different
from connecting 2 computers together with an ethernet cord. Most ISPs
use DHCP to give you an address (much like a regular dial-up) and your
computer merely thinks that it is on a LAN. Which actually, it is; cable
networks are nothing more than neighborhood LANs.

The cable 'modem' isn't really a modem, more like a network bridge. Kind
of like those Ethernet to Localtalk adaptors people had to use for their
old AppleTalk Printers to work with the iMac when it first came out.

I also always recommend that my clients get a router. Not so much for
sharing the connection, but for security. They are a great and easy way
to keep out idle snoops (and many times even worse people). If you don't
have a router, DO NOT ENABLE FILE SHARING! Using a network mapping
program (for good reasons:) I can find at least a dozen people in my
area that have wide open printers that I could use thanks to Windows
file/print sharing.

Anything else anyone would like to know?
