Sorry Nancy. Andy the owner told me the machine was running 8.6 when he got
it. Somehow using a borrowed Ibook disc he managed to load OSX onto a single
partition As I recall the model is a 333 Mhz machine and the CD has an eject
button unlike the only other Imac I have worked with which had no eject
button

Yes Fritz I started from OS9 CD initialised the hard drive with 2
partitions but got the firmware message when I tried to install OS9.

I ran the updater from the OS9 CD got the locked disc message. I copied the
updater to the HD and tried it from there but got the same message.

start up and load OS8.6, copy the firmware updater from the OS9 CD to the
hard drive, run it and then load OS9. That is unless you know different

As I mentioned this involves a 40 mile round trip for Andy so I wanted to be
sure of a solution before calling him back.

Am I barking up the right tree or just barking?

Thanks again for the input
Best regards John
