John, I think you are on the right trail. I updated a iMac 333 from 8.5 to 9.1 in pretty much the same manner. I would be inclined to do the drive partitioning with the 8.6 install. Then do a "clean install" of OS 9. (Later trashing the Previous System Folder from 8.6) Do make sure you update the Drivers when you install OS 9. Then, hopefully, the OS10 install will go smoothly.
