Hi all, this is a little off topic. I have my S900 but that is doing fine. My question is about an iMac. I am trying to reinstall the system software but can't seem to start from the cd. I have tried to hold down the c key while booting, and also tried to use the command-option-shift-delete.
A little bit about the machine: I bought it at a dot-com auction, so it was already preconfigured. It has OS X installed and OS 9 or 9.1. My 4 year old daughter loves to play on it ( I got if for her ) but she managed to go in and mess up OS 9 enough that it will not boot into that operating system. It was running OS X okay, but all of a sudden it is prompting for a log in name and password, neither of which I have. So I am unable to go in and set the cd as the start up disk either. My thinking was that if I were able to boot from CD I could initialize the hard drive and reinstall at least OS 9, and later OS X since I didn't get a copy of that with the computer. In addition to simply trying to start from CD by the above methods, I read a little on the Apple site about iMacs and possible boot problems. I have reset the PRAM and also gone in and reset (?) the NVRAM, if that is the correct usage. I had read that there could be a low level password enabled that would prevent booting from the CD and that going into NVRAM could be a way around that. I did attempt that to no avail. My only other alternative that I have thought of, outside of going to an Apple dealer (where they might be curious as to why the machine is in some one else's name) is to pull the hard drive and hook it up to my IDE adapter on my S900 and initialize it there. I am not sure if that is even possible, but at this point I am willing to try anything. If anyone can help with suggestions or places to look for help, I would appreciate it, and sorry about the off topic query. Thanks.
