Assuming it is a serial printer, it is entirely possible that the 
lightening storm took out one or both of her serial ports.  I'd try 
the printer on the other serial port.  Also, try some other serial 
device (external modem if you've got it, e.g.) on the serial port to 
which the printer was connected.
